about

David Newlyn is an ambient musician from Durham, England.

‘Too Late In The Wrong Rain’ is his recent record released on mini50 records in May 2011.

An extremely private musician, David has in the past released music on Best Kept Secret, Abandon Ship, Symbolic Interaction as well as Boltfish, U Cover and Mobeer. His influences include Stephen Jones / Babybird, Eno (of course), Robert Haigh and Ryuichi Sakamoto. He records and edits his music at home.

‘Too Late in the Wrong Rain’ was constructed using piano, strings, prepared guitar, acoustic guitar and electric guitar and sometimes feature recordings made elsewhere on cassette dictaphone or digital camera. The record evokes thoughts of the brooding string compositions of Jóhann Jóhannsson and Olafur Arnalds and combines them with the stark minimalism of such works as ‘The Road’ by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis and the piano pieces of Ryuichi Sakamoto. This combination of warmth and shade sets him apart from his contemporaries. Newlyn is a master at the dark and understated and ‘Too Late in the Wrong Rain’ should firmly cement his reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting young ambient musicians.

THE PRESS SAY:

"...the use of piano marks Newlyn out from much of the rest of the ambient/electroacoustic crowd, and the inventiveness and skill with which it is used is a notch or two above the hummable little ditties found gracing film and TV soundtracks." Fluid Radio

"Newlyn has come a long way since ‘Ancient Lights’. Yet even if his music is now geared towards modern classical rather than electronica, his gift for connecting to human emotions remains constant." Leonard's Lair
